Question—One day my locs are soft and moisturized, and then the next day my locs feel hard and brittle. What do I do to get the moisture back into my locs?
Answer: This is a really great question because this is a situation we can all relate to— at one point or another— in our loc journey. Just when we think we have our moisturizing routine down to a science, we wake up to find our locs are not has moisturized or soft as we would normally expect. Sometimes this can be an easy fix and sometimes the solution may require a more complex approach. However, before we start over complicating things, I want to share with you a few quick tips to help you to restore the moisture in your locs.
How To Restore Moisture In Locs
Before we get into product application because I know that is where we always like to go for the “quick fix”; I believe we first have to understand what is actually happening when we are moisturizing our locs. Every time you get out of bed and mist your locs with a moisturizer or when you spray your favorite moisturizer on your locs after the gym, you are truly just refreshing the moisture level— not creating it. The balance of moisture was set in your locs the last time you washed your hair. This is why it is so important that you are using the proper shampoos and/or conditioning agents during wash day. It is only natural that a week after washing our hair we are in need of a little moisture refresh in our locs. But, when that week between moisturizing is shorted to days or everyday we know there may be an issue we have to address.

The main areas that I want you to focus on when you are attempting to restore a strong moisture balance within your locs are your water intake, the combination of shampoos, type of moisturizer, and the type of oil you are using. You should always strive to consume half your weight in ounces of water per day (seriously!), never lead with a moisturizing shampoo, use an herbal moisturizer—not a refresher, and ensure that your oil is able to penetrate the hair and not sit atop it. In my recent video, “How to Restore Moisture To Your Locs” I show a simple example of a restorative routine using the Moisture Infusion moisturizer and the Mane Radiance oil.
Still need help? If you have invested in quality products for your washing routine, continuously used an herbal moisturizer and sealed with a lightweight, emollient oil; but are still suffering from dry and/or brittle locs, I would highly suggest scheduling a Virtual Consultation so that we can create a customized regimen that will help to rejuvenate your locs!
